Check List

DISCONNECT ALL APPLIANCES:

  • Turn off gas and water
  • Drain all hoses
  • Empty refrigerator and disconnect ice maker
  • Make sure the freezer has time to defrost.

DRESSER DRAWERS:

  • Dresser drawers can be left filled with light clothes and linen.
  • Remove all valuables and items that could spill

DISCONNECT CORDS:

  • Disconnect and bundle cords on television and stereo components.

PACKING:

  • Consider having Bekins Northwest do the packing.
  • If you choose to do some packing, all cartons MUST be SEALED with tape or tied shut.

SAVE TIME:

  • If you have a concern for time, move the smaller items from the basement or upstairs to the main floor before moving day if possible.
  • Carry backyard items to the front so that they can be easily loaded onto the moving van.

PREPARE HOME FOR MOVING DAY:

  • Tie gates, screen doors and remove doors if necessary.
  • Helpful hint is to remember back what problems you had moving in, so you can advise the movers.

RESERVE ELEVATORS:

  • Reserve elevators with apartment managers
  • Check to see if the apartment can pad their elevators for you, (we will do it otherwise.)

ARRANGE PARKING SPACE:

  • Arrange parking space for the van at both the pick-up and delivery addresses.

  • Plan and measure where your furniture will be placed in your new home.

GENERAL RULE FOR INTERNATIONAL MOVING:

  • The shipping cost of light and bulky items will be much higher on a per pound basis than that of a heavy and compact item.

CALL THE CONSULATE / EMBASSY IN ADVANCE OF MOVING DAY:

  • You must call the consulate / embassy of the country you are moving to, well in advance of moving day. There are several arrangements that need to be made.

  • Monthly storage charges are billed on a weight basis, so now is the time to discard any unwanted items.

FOR LONG DISTANCE MOVING

Check List

CHECK OFF INVENTORY:

  • To ensure that everything loaded at origin is delivered at destination, you MUST check off the inventory yourself.
  • Ask that the driver and crew call off the inventory numbers, which are on all pieces, including cartons.

TWO PEOPLE AT DESTINATION:

  • It is best to have two people at destination
  • One to check off the inventory and the other to show the movers where to place your belongings.

CHECK CONDITION OF BELONGINGS:

  • Check the condition of everything as closely as possible for damage.
  • Make note to any exceptions to the condition on the inventories upon delivery. There is a column within the inventory especially for your exceptions.

IMMEDIATE UNPACKING:

  • Cartons that contain valuable items such as silver, art work, etc., should be unpacked immediately.

SET UP:

  • The driver is responsible for setting up pads (water beds excluded) and reassembling any item that he or she disassembled at origin.

UNPACKING:

  • If you wish to have everything unpacked, call your Moving Consultant prior to the delivery so that we can arrange unpacking services for you.

  • For the comfort of your children, it is often helpful to have them stay with a friend or relative during the delivery process.

PACKING MATERIALS:

  • If Bekins Northwest does the unpacking, we are responsible for taking away the packing debris.
  • If you choose to do your own unpacking, there may be an additional charge for a carton pick-up. Please consult your Moving Consultant.

INVENTORY:

  • Before the driver leaves, make sure you have noted on the inventories the condition of your household goods and any missing items.

  • Unsafe items which CANNOT be carried by Bekins Northwest are:

  • Ammunition, Paints, Flammables, Aerosols
  • A detailed list is provided below.

HIGH VALUE ITEMS:

  • High Value Items that should not be shipped by Bekins Northwest are:
  • Cash, Coin Collections, Jewelry (High Value)
  • Stocks & Bonds

PLAN TO BE AT HOME:

  • Plan to be at home and make yourself available to the movers the entire day of packing. Packing times vary depending on the number and type of cartons to be boxed.

  • For the comfort of your children, it is often helpful to have them stay with friends or relatives during the packing process.

REFRIGERATOR / FREEZER:

  • Have your refrigerator / freezer emptied and defrosted by loading day.

VIEW VALUABLE ITEMS:

  • If the packers are to box valuable items, such as silver, artwork, furs, etc., ask them to let you view the packing of those particular items.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: To ensure the safe packing, transportation, and delivery of your household goods, we need to alert you to a list of hazardous items. The following items unfortunately CANNOT BE TRANSPORTED BY BEKINS NORTHWEST due to regulations. If you have any questions or concerns, please call your local Bekins Northwest branch. Thank You!

COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS:

  • Alcohol, Camphor oil, Disinfectants
  • Liquid Cleaners (i.e., spot clothing cleaners, office machine liquid cleaners, etc.)

CORROSIVE LIQUIDS:

  • Acids, Photographic type Etching Acid, Iron/Steel rust preventors
  • Muriatic Acid, Nitric Acid, Sulfuric Acid

EXPLOSIVES:

  • Black Powder, Cigarette Loads, Dynamite (Plastics, etc.)
  • Explosive Arms, Fireworks, Any Ammunition Primers
